for Synthetic 3D Imaging

General 3D imaging

Stereo computer graphics and other true 3D technologies. edited by David F. McAllister. Princeton, N.J. : Princeton University Press, 1993. *EL*
A good overview of 3D display technology. Somewhat spotty, but a possible partial textbook for this course.
Can be found in the Columbia Bookstore, ordered from the publisher (call 1-800-777-4726). Cost is around $80.

T. Okoshi, Three-Dimensional Imaging Techniques. New York: Academic Press, 1976. *EL*
Definitive text on stereoscopic and lenticular technologies.

M. McKenna and D. Zeltzer, "Three dimensional visual display systems for virtual environments," Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments. vol. 1 #4, pp. 421-458, 1992.
An excellent overview comparing existing interactive 3D display systems in a general sense.
Handed out in Jan 29 class!

Computer graphics

J. D. Foley, A. Van Dam, S. K. Feiner, and J. F. Hughes, Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice. Reading, Mass.: Addison-Wesley, 1990. *EL*
Recommended textbook for CG. Good to have by your side.

Holography

P. Hariharan, Optical Holography: principles, techniques, and applications. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1984. *EL*
Excellent theoretical treatment of holography. More involved than necessary for this course.

Computational Holography

W. J. Dallas, "Computer Generated Holograms," in The Computer in Optical Research, B. R. Frieden editor, Vol. 41 of Springer Series Topics in Applied Physics. Berlin: Springer Verlag, 1980, pp. 291-366. *EL* Chapter 6 (pp. 291-366)
Ch. 6 is an excellent overview of computational holography, though somewhat out-dated.

O. Bryngdahl and F. Wyrowski, "Digital holography - computer-generated holograms," in Progress in Optics, E. Wolf, ed. (North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1990), vol. 28, pp. 1-86.

General optics

E. Hecht, Optics. Reading, Mass.: Addison-Wesley, 1987. *EL* See esp. Ch. 5: "Geometric Optics", Ch. 8: "Polarization".
Good Undergraduate optics textbook.

D.S. Falk, D.R. Brill, D.G. Stork, Seeing the Light: Optics in Nature, Photography, Color, and Holography. Harper and Row, New York, 1986.
Fun to read, undergraduate-level overview of optics, light, and vision.

Perception

S. Coren, L. M. Ward, J. T. Ennis, Sensation and Perception, 4th ed., Harcourt Brace College Publishers, New York, 1994. See esp. Ch. 10: "Space".
Fun textbook for basic cognitive science.

(*EL* = on reserve at the Engineering Library)
